Volunteer trip to Nepal as a woman (3) - Mask required! Thamel street

As I mentioned in the previous post, I went on a short-term volunteer trip to Nepal through an organization called IVHQ.

In the previous post, the process of applying for volunteer work through IVHQ and before leaving for Nepal, some volunteer programs start in earnest with an orientation on Monday, while I arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday night and had free time on Sunday.​

Since the guesthouse provided by the group was close to Thamel Street, I naturally went to Thamel Street.

Thamel was like Myeong-dong for Koreans, and it felt like a foreigner's house when traveling to Nepal.

 

Taxis, motorcycles, and people are all tangled up in these narrow streets. And the fabric that is presumed to have colorful mandalas written on it (?!) and the wires tangled in many layers are the charm of the streets of Tamel.

I felt it often in Southeast Asia, but the air is not very good because I use a lot of motorcycles. It was hot, but I had to wear a mask. ㅠ

But the first town to see. Isn't it the charm of travel to be hectic here and there again?

Thamel has a variety of food, from Nepalese food such as Nepalese dumplings Momo and the famous dal bhat, to pasta and pizza.

My first Nepali lunch choice was...

Egg ramen from Sopung, a Korean restaurant. They said they gave kkakdugi for free!! It really tasted like being in Korea.

In addition to the first day in Thamel, on Tuesday, when there was no volunteer work because it was a Nepalese holiday, I tried to kill time and participate in a yoga class.

I also went a couple more times to shop the day before the last one.

Yoga classes around Thamel usually start very early in the morning or around 6pm, but in my case, I had to go in the afternoon right before going to the host house assigned to volunteer, so I just Googled and found one.

Because the teacher worked in Korea, I was able to speak Korean! Haha It was a little more intense than the Korean yoga class, but it was a cooler and more fun class. However, since it is located at the end of Thamel Street, we had to consider the noise unique to Thamel.

And the day before I left Nepal, I went shopping for cashmere and things to give to my acquaintances in Thamel, my last stop.

Actually, as you know, there are not many things worth buying as souvenirs in Nepal.

Since it's a place with a lot of tourists, and I'm a traveler no matter who sees it, this person touts a lot, and the taxi drivers always go overboard.

​

But that's also the charm of travel.
